OUR STORY
Started at one table, built for every table
Mahjong Mamis started as a Facebook group because I wanted a place where mahjong players of every level — brand new, rusty, or been-playing-since-the-90s — could actually talk shop without feeling like they'd wandered into the wrong room.
Beginners get their rules questions answered without judgment. Longtime players get somewhere to talk cards, strategy, and the culture around the game. And once in a while, we talk about the tools that make organizing a regular game easier — including Kongvene, the app I built for exactly that.
MAHJONG 101
Rules, cards & culture
A running library of explainers for the community — start here if you're new, or jump to what you're curious about.
RULES
American Mahjong, start to finish
How a hand is built, what "calling" a tile means, and the basic flow of a round — written for someone who has never sat at a table before.
THE CARD
Reading the 2025 & 2026 NMJL card
What actually changes on the yearly card, how to read a hand line, and why the same hand can look totally different year to year.
ETIQUETTE
Table manners, unspoken rules
Common patterns worth knowing — not house rules we enforce, just things you might run into at a new table.
STRATEGY
Building a hand on purpose
Reading your rack early, deciding when to switch hands, and when defense matters more than your own hand.
GLOSSARY
Mahjong terms, plainly explained
Jokers, exposures, the wall, the Charleston — a running glossary members can point newcomers to instead of re-explaining every time.
INDUSTRY
What's happening in mahjong
New sets, tournaments, clubs opening near you, and anything else worth knowing if you care about the game beyond your own table.
BUILT BY A MAMI, FOR MAHJONG GROUPS
Kongvene
The part of running a regular mahjong group that isn't the game itself — who's in this week, whose turn it is to host, who still owes for last time — Kongvene handles it so your group can just show up and play.
- RSVP, sorted into tables. "I'm In" or "I'm Out," seated automatically at tables of four, subs promoted in if someone drops.
- Host Rotation. Alphabetical turn order, one tap to pass hosting to the next person.
- Need a Fourth. A broadcast to your circle when a table's short a player.
- Dues Tracker. Who's paid for game day and who hasn't, with a Venmo/Cash App request built in.
Free to join and use for every member. Organizer-only features are being introduced gradually, with a heads-up to the community before anything changes.
